Symmetrical African/Trooper Masks
The first grade students learned about African masks and the symbolism behind them. They then used the blank stormtropper handout to create their own symmetrical design.

Assessment:
1. Student will use a black felt tip marker to add shapes to the blank stormtrooper mask. _____/5
2. Student uses a pattern of letters, numbers, and or shapes to create their rhythmic design. _____/5
3. The student has used at least 2 warm and 2 cool colors to color in their design to colorize
create and create contrast. Crayola markers or water based markers will be used for this portion _____/5
4. Craftsmanship, the student draws their initial black designs clearly and neatly and color is added
in a neat manner as well. Areas are filled to edges, color is contained in areas. _____/10
Enrichment:
Students who finish quickly can take a photo of their mask, upload it to a computer and manipulate
it on Pixlar online.
Remediation:
Students who are having fine motor skill trouble will be given extra time to finish.
